Der Melo-Core erfindet sich gegenwärtig nicht neu, sondern entwickelt sich vornehmlich zurück. Zumindest zeitlich. Zahlreiche Bands, egal ob alte Garde oder neue Mitmischer, pflegen einen Sound, der die mittleren bis späten 1990er aufleben lässt. Überraschungspotential bietet das kaum. Dafür umso mehr nostalgischen Charme. Der zielt vorrangig darauf ab, Emotionen aufleben zu lassen und sich einer Phase zu erinnern, in der Punk ein wesentlicher Faktor des Heranwachsens war. Quasi der Soundtrack des angehenden Post-Teenager-Daseins.
Eine Band, die dies Gefühl perfekt widerspiegelt, ist OMAHA. Die Kanadier interpretieren den Punk-Rock auf eine Weise, die sie früher zweifelsfrei bei Epitaph Records ins Gespräch gebracht hätte. Heute, in der heimelig eingerichteten Retro-Nische, reicht es (in Europa) immerhin für Morning Wood Records, wo die Befriedigung musikalischer Gelüste nach klassischer Bauart des melodischen Hardcores quasi das Grundprinzip markiert. Das dritte Output des Quintetts, obendrein der erste Langspieler, trägt den anti-programmatischen Titel „IV“.
Auf ihm serviert das Gespann aus Toronto elf Songs, die wie der Opener „With Our Eyes Open“ offenbart, in melodischen Belangen zwar teils merkliche Metal-Einschläge verzeichnen, daneben aber Skate-Punk der Marke A WILHELM SCREAM (zu „Mute Print“-Zeitrn) oder CIGAR folgt. Stets treibend, mit packendem Gesang, ansteckender Bewegungsfreude und gesteigertem Mitgröl-Potential laden Beiträge der Güteklasse „Falling Down“, „Again Some Day“, „Point of no Return“, „Idiocracy“ oder „80-D“ zur putzmunteren Zeitreise ein. Ein Verfallsdatum haftet diesem Sound jedenfalls auch durch das Zutun von OMAHA keinesfalls an. Danke dafür!
The Melo-Core is currently not being reinvented, but mainly regressing. At least in terms of time. Numerous bands, whether old favourites or new collaborators, cultivate a sound that revives the mid to late 1990s. This hardly offers any potential for surprises. But all the more nostalgic charm. The primary aim is to bring emotions to life and to remember a phase in which punk was an essential factor in growing up. Quasi the soundtrack of the aspiring post-teenager existence.
One band that perfectly reflects this feeling is OMAHA. The Canadians interpret punk rock in a way that would undoubtedly have brought them into conversation with Epitaph Records in the past. Today, in the cozy retro niche, it is enough (at least in Europe) for Morning Wood Records, where the satisfaction of musical cravings in the classical style of melodic hardcore is virtually the basic principle. The quintet’s third output, on top of that the first longplayer, bears the anti-programmatic title „IV“.
On it the Toronto based band serves up eleven songs, which, as the opener „With Our Eyes Open“ reveals, have some noticeable metal influences in melodic matters, but are followed by skate punk in the fashion of A WILHELM SCREAM (during the „Mute Print“ period) or CIGAR. Always driving, with gripping vocals, infectious joy of movement and increased singalong potential, tracks like „Falling Down“, „Again Some Day“, „Point of No Return“, „Idiocracy“ or „80-D“ invite you to a lively journey through time. An expiration date is not attached to this sound when OMAHA is involved. Thanks for that!
