The Casting Out (Interview Juli 2010)

Hi Nathan, how are you doing?

N: doing well thanks

Once again you recently toured Germany. What are your impressions, especially compared to previous visits?

N: I love coming to Germany. We have always been warmly welcomed there, and always have a great time.

I heard you guys played some BOY SETS FIRE songs on tour. Is that right?

N: That is not true at all, and we never will.

How came your interlude with the German daily soap “Gute Zeiten, Schlechte Zeiten”?

N: We were asked to do it…figured, why not.

Was it meant as a serious marketing tool to reach a wider audience or was it more like a gag and just for the fun of it?

N: I’d say honestly a little of both. Never hurts to play to people that wouldn’t normally come out and see you…but more so, it was funny and fun as hell. I don’t know why a band would ever pass up doing something like that. It was an amazing experience in a realm of ridiculousness that we know nothing about. We mostly just made people there feel uncomfortable. We are very unprofessional.

How have the reactions been on that guest appearing - especially from the German audiences on your last tour?

N: Have not noticed a difference, but then again, I have not been paying attention for a difference. We play shows to have fun, and play music. Not for the numbers and the business.

You recently released your second record. What can you tell us about the writing and working process?

N: It was a great time for us. We had so much fun during the writing and recording of this album…and it was the first time in a long time, I got to do exactly what I wanted to do, without answering to anyone else.

It seems that THE CASTING OUT is like a carousel. Two band members left the band after recording the new album. What are the reasons for that and how difficult is it for you to find new band members with a longer commitment for that band?

N: It's been very difficult dealing with certain members lack of commitment, but with every member that leaves, it seems those that stay become stronger in their commitment to make this band work. Our new guitarist Mark Palese seems to be just as committed to the cause, so here's to hoping it will all work out. Doesn't matter though, no matter what, I'm gonna keep fighting to do what I love... Funny enough, that's exactly what let it bleed is about... No matter what, putting everything you have into your dreams and ambition.

In my opinion the production value lacks the melodic power of “Go Crazy, Throw Fireworks” and especially the vocals have an appreciable different tone. How would you define the stylistic changes between your two albums?

N: In my opinion, production values, and pop, creamy, over produced crap is killing the energy and aggressiveness of rock n roll, and I’m over it. The new album is melodic, and catchy as hell…its just not poppy and polished, and I intend to keep it that way.

At the beginning your self titled record is filled with high speed sing-along parts. But later on it seems that you wanted to convey different emotions and open up for experiments. Did the record turned out the way you expected or even planned it?

N: Nothing was planned, except to make an aggressive, melodic, catchy, powerful punk rock album, that didn’t rely on overproduction, synthesizers, or auto tune overload to sell it.

The song “Heaven Knows” shows once again your qualities as a shouter, which reminded me inevitably of your former band. Do you sometimes miss the scream parts of your BOY SETS FIRE era and what were the reasons for the emotional raptures at the end of the record?

N: Nope. I don’t look back. I look forward to what this new band can accomplish. Songs like heaven knows, let it bleed, and everybody down, seemed to call for screaming parts, so I did them. Also, some of these songs are somewhat socially or politically based…that has nothing to do with my previous band, but who I am, and what I care about, and want to write about.

How have the reactions on the new material been so far?

N: So far, its been great… some people get hung up on the production, but others get it, and understand why it was so important for this album to be exactly how it is.

If you take a look into the future, what do you wish to achieve with THE CASTING OUT?

N: I hope to play shows and tour as much as possible. Its been great sharing these songs with people live, and hopefully they feel a connection with the songs like we do. The fun, the emotion, the energy…its been great.

What are your plans for the rest of 2010?

N: Train our new guitarist and bass player, and tour as much as humanly possible

Thanks for the interview and greetings from Germany!

N: Thanks so much!
