Highlives – Misguided Youth (2015, DIY)

Pop-Punk does not necessarily equal Pop-Punk. On the one hand there are the sterile chartbreakers without any rough edges left (ALL TIME LOW), on the other hand you have the impetuous misfits who do not take the pop-share literally and fear neither crooked voals nor generall harshness (KNUCKLEPUCK). Although the British band HIGHLIVES clearly tends to the latter named category, they add a good dose of melancholy to their sound. Cover and artwork of their self-produced „Misguided Youth“-EP are significant indications of a consequent shift away from formatic US-bubblegum-clichés and the overall attached juvenile plastic world.

The Pop-Punk punch fits only partially to the five songs (most likely to the balladesque „Twenty Two“). Tunes like the preliminary „Wake Me Up“, „Heavy Weight“ or especially the final „Better Days“ essentially remind of Indie related bands like IRON CHIC. Evocative rhythm changes, breakdowns, gangvocals and a subtly gloomy touch make up the peculiar charm of HIGHLIVES. Nevertheless the five guys from Bristol don’t put emphasis on calculated hit potential. Hence „Misguided Youth“ may need a little start-up until it reaches its full impact, but once taken, you won’t get it out of your head promptly. Let’s hope there will be more to come!
